There are a number of factors that lead to drying up of the scalp. Understanding the cause of your dry scalp is a step closer to eliminating the problem and with these DIY shampoos, dry scalp will be a thing of the past. Of course, your first task is to choose the shampoo that works best for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, chances are you have a dry scalp because of a wrong shampoo. Give some of these homemade shampoos a try and hopefully you will get rid of that problem.
1. Raw organic honey
The European Medical Journal published a study in which researchers studied the use of diluted honey (90% honey diluted in warm water) that 30 patients with chronic seborrhea dermatitis of the front of the chest, face, scalp and used every day with gentle rubbing for 2 to 3 minutes. The honey was then rinsed off after 3 hours with warm water.
The dry and itchy skin disappeared within 1 week with skin lesions healing completely in 2 weeks. Subjective improvement in hair loss was also noticed. Honey is an excellent broad spectrum anti-fungal and antibacterial with anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties, which makes it ideal for treating dry scalp caused by fungi and/or bacteria.
You do not necessarily have to wait 3 hours, just apply a little bit of diluted raw honey to your scalp, using your finger tips, massage gently for a minute and rinse it off with warm water.
2. Listerine
Mix 2 parts water with 1 part Listerine mouthwash. Massage gently on your scalp for a few minutes and let it sit for 3 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Listerine helps to fight fungi and thus cures dry scalp.
3. Jojoba oil
Make a strong herbal tea with filtered water and 2 tablespoons peppermint leaves and allow it to steep for at least 20 minutes. Strain and pour the tea into an empty bottle. Add 2 tablespoons glycerin, a half teaspoon jojoba oil, half a teaspoon raw honey and a quarter cup liquid castile soap. Mix and shampoo as usual.
4. Tea tree oil
Add half a teaspoon organic tea tree oil (inorganic brands may contain pesticides and have weak healing properties) to half a teaspoon lavender oil. Add precisely a quarter teaspoon salicylic acid (it is extremely powerful yet effective) and 3 drops of peppermint oil, and shampoo as usual.
5. Vinegar
Mix together half a cup of warm water with half a cup of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, pour the mixture over your hair and scrub gently for a few minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water. This helps to restore natural acids while removing build-up. Moreover, it helps to balance pH as well.
6. Aloe Vera gel
Researches show aloe vera gel can help soothe dry hair and scalp in an all-natural way. Mix a quarter cup aloe vera gel and a quarter cup liquid castile soap in a medium bowl using a wire whisk. Stir in a teaspoon of glycerin and a quarter teaspoon of olive oil, and use the mixture as a shampoo.
7. Baking soda
Baking soda is well known for its fantastic health and beauty benefits. It can be good for your dry scalp as well. Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda, a cup warm water and a few drops of rosemary oil, put the mixture in an empty bottle, shake well and apply generously. Rinse off with warm and then cold water.
